Why Aren’t My Guitar Skills Improving?

Great lesson Erich! Also, loving the black background and the softer lighting (sorry to be such a production nerd)! Nice stuff all around!

"Wax on. Wax off…" is real. Have faith in every single string you strike (did not say pick) and how you strike it. Sage, you are the real deal.

I think that the contacts look better than the specs. You've such a wise face that you don't need the glasses to make you look any wiser.

What if you want to learn a song you like but have no idea how to go about doing it or cant find any kind of music sheets online for it?

Also, idk if this is just a practice thing, but lets say ive learned how to play a song, and also figured out the lyrics to that song as well. In my case, i cant put them together, if i play the song on guitar, i will mess up the lyrics and vice versa. How would you make it feel natural to just play it and sing it at the same time without trailing off?

sometimes we are improving when we dont realize it as well, i know i thought i was in a prolonged plateau for awhile and then i realized i was just really slowly improving and one day i felt like a much better player. the most important thing is to keep at it and like erich says its so important to work on different things/styles/etc and to work on the things we arent that good at (barre chords for a lot of people), thanx erich, keep up the great work man!

"Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results." Most people credit Einstein with this, but it wasn't him. Good lesson. Thanks.

  8. autocrow

I always knew it was possible because so many people can do it. I also knew it would be slow going and you had to really enjoy the journey. The internet with people like you is a real blessing for learning guitar! Someone HAS to show you how to play. There is no such thing as "self taught." I know because I tried it and it doesn't work.

I believe you should at least have a couple of signature licks,I have about 4 of them that no one can figure out,but yeah I see wear your comin from..

Thx. Erich….Good and what should be common sense approach to progressing on guitar, as well as other challenges.

  12. John St. Jean

Thanks for reminding me of switching things up instead of pushing forward and not getting anywhere. My soulmate and wife always tells me that but I never listen…Duh…. I guess I really should. It might really make a difference.

  13. Jason Wade

Dude where have you been?!? Hope all is well and your finalizing the sig guitar.
Great to see this and totally agree with every word.
“Too many people today know the price of everything and the value of nothing.”
Your knowledge is very valuable, much more than the price you place on it. Thanks Eric! 🤘🏻

Cool video! Can you play Left Hand Free and can you make Video about it

  16. Celeste Chick

Thanks for the video! My biggest "problem" when learning new things is picking a song that I want to learn that has some element of something new without being overly difficult to where I get frustrated with it and not enjoy the process, and not too easy to where I plateau 🙂

  17. Pratik Khobragade

Hello, can you enlighten us with some lessons on how to master solo stuff? Or how the approach should be. Thanks!

  18. that youtube channel

You know, I've asked myself why my technical abilities are not improving, then I just went back to a song that I've been totally baffled by, knocked down entirely, and I attempt it. Nine times out of ten, I'm better at it than I was the last time I played. Maybe I can't play it well yet, probably can't, even, but I play it better. You are your own worst critic.

  19. Walt Bonczek

'the definition of Insanity is repeating the same things over and over again and expecting different results' is the quote..

  20. Wendy Eyles

Wise words Erich. It took me eight months before I could play barre chords and now I'm learning about the CAGED system. With guitar there is always something new to learn and I love it!
